Meet the Teekay Australia Management Team.

David Parmeter


David Parmeter has extensive experience in the shipping and towage industries, having worked in the maritime sector for 30 years. David commenced with BHP Steel in Port Kembla in 1981 as an Industrial Relations Officer before moving to the Australian National Line (ANL) in 1984. In 1987 he joined what became the Australian Shipowners Association (ASA), eventually holding the position of Director Human Resources. David moved to Teekay in 2002 as head of Human Resources in Australia before taking over the role of Managing Director in 2006. David holds Degrees in Law and Commerce, specialising in Industrial Relations. He still remains a director of Maritime Industry Australia Limited (MIAL) and is involved in various CEO/Director organisations.


John joined Teekay after being Fleet Manager with Shell Tankers Australia based in Perth, Western Australia. John commenced his career at sea with Shell in 1992 and moved to a shore position in 2004 as Assistant Engineer Superintendent within the LNG Fleet of Shell International Trading & Shipping Company, London (STASCo). John progressed to Engineer Superintendent with STASCo responsible for MR, LR2, VLCC and parcel tankers operated from the London Office.

In late 2007 John emigrated to Perth, Western Australia to commence employment with Shell as Engineer Superintendent. In 2009 John was the Project Manager for the first Longevity Project of the Shell managed, Northwest Shelf Shipping Service Company LNG Carrier “Northwest Sanderling” and then in 2010 followed-up with the second Longevity Project for the “Northwest Snipe”, in Sembawang Shipyard.

During his tenure with Shell in Perth, John has seen a significant improvement in the Safety performance of the LNG Fleet over the last seven years, noting the significant acknowledgement of the four Australian Flagged LNG vessels simultaneously operating four years without an LTI, and one vessel operating in excess of 21 years LTI free.


Mark Thomas joined Teekay in 2002 as a result of Teekay taking over the management of BHP Billiton’s marine operations.

Mark held various technical management positions in Teekay until 2004 when he assumed the responsibility for Teekay Australia’s towage operations. In his role as Fleet Director, Towage he managed the 200% growth of the towage fleet.  In January 2012, Mark assumed the position of Director Towage & Marine Services and became Company Director of Teekay Australian entities.  Effective January 2015 Mark assumed the positions of Director, Projects and Development.  Mark has over 36 years of industry experience in ship and tug operations, ship construction, ship repair and project management.



Sean Quinlan has served in Teekay since the joint venture with BHP Billiton in January 2002. He has had 28 years’ sea service, eleven of which were as Master, carrying LNG, LPG, bulk cargoes and General Cargo. The first two years ashore he worked as a Project Manager for the Teekay Australian operation. Since 2008 he has been the Regional Marine Manager for Teekay Australia.



Josh Day has recently returned to Teekay Australia after serving as Director, Global HSEQ, in the Teekay Singapore office. Reporting to the CEO of Teekay Corporation, he was responsible for HSEQ strategy and companywide programs that led to significant safety improvements. In 2013 Josh worked with the Teekay fleet groups to develop the Safety Roadmap, which outlined Teekay’s safety strategy and plans for ongoing improvement. He worked closely with senior members of Teekay management to ensure the successful implementation of these strategies across a variety of fleet types.

Josh began his career as a Deck Cadet with BHP in 1997. In 2002, Teekay formed a joint venture with BHP. He worked his way through the ranks and sailed as Master in 2009. During this period he was also seconded to Teekay Australia`s shore team for various periods. He came ashore permanently in the role of Manager Risk, Quality and Performance with Teekay Sydney in 2009. From 2010 he served as Manager, Health and Safety and DPA in the Teekay Vancouver office. In September 2012 he relocated to Teekay in Singapore to set up a new central HSEQ department after a significant organization restructure. Josh has a Business Degree in Maritime and Logistics Management and brings with him significant experience from across the wider Teekay group of companies.



Kent Xia joined Teekay Shipping (Australia) Pty Ltd in 2015. He is currently Manager of Finance and Accounting as well as Company Secretary and Director.

Kent is responsible for the overall accounting and financial management activities related to Australia and New Zealand, which include finance, corporate governance, tax, legal, audit and financial reporting.

Kent has had prior experience in a range of business sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, transport and technologies.



Amol started his sea career in 1988, joined Teekay in the conventional fleet as Chief Officer in December 2000. He was promoted to Master in January 2005, sailing in this role until 2008. He then transitioned to the Quality Assurance Training Officer (QATO) program. Most recently he was serving as Senior QATO working for the Teekay Safety and Quality group.During his time in Teekay Amol has been involved in a number of projects including Chief Officers Training program, SCOPE pilot project, Floating Storage and Regasification Unit tendering project, Maersk LNG integration and most recently the Navigation Safety Project. He brings 27 years of industry experience and in addition he brings with him a wealth of HSEQ experience from his time in the QATO program.Amol joined Teekay Shipping Australia as HSEQ Manager in November 2015.
